Monte Do Cordal wind farm in Spain will have a 12.6 mw capacity and will produce more than 47,412 mwh, enough energy to supply 13,500 homes

  • The facilities, developed by Greenalia and comprised of three wind turbines, will be located in Friol with over 10.6 million euros investment
  • Its construction and operation will create 125 jobs for the local area and will contribute more than 260,000 euros to the municipality through taxes and fees.

Greenalia, a renewable energy company from A Coruña, will develop the Monte do Cordal wind farm in the municipality of Friol (Lugo). The wind farm will have an installed capacity of 12.6 MW and its investment will be more than 10.6 million euros.

The installation, which started public display phase today after publication in Galicia’s Official Gazette, will be made up of 3 wind turbines with a hub height of 107 meters and a rotor diameter of 150 meters and will produce 47,412 MWh each year, enough energy to supply 13,500 homes.

Once approved, the construction plan for the wind farm is expected to take five months and create more than 125 jobs. The wind farm’s construction will add €260,000 to the municipal coffers through taxes and fees.

The area that will contain the Monte do Cordal Wind Farm is located outside of the Galician Network of Protected Spaces and the Natura 2000 Network, including the area contained within the latter’s Extension Proposal. The development area does not include any IBAs (Important Bird Areas), any priority areas for reproduction, feeding, dispersal, and/or local concentration of birds, and it is more than 10 kilometers from the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve.

The project includes the different contributions made by the sector organizations during the public information process for this wind farm’s commencement document. Thus, after that phase, the total number of wind turbines was reduced from 4 to 3 (located in a group) so that the impact on the landscape would be minimized. In addition, we must also remember another interesting factor: the use of existing infrastructure for power evacuation, thus avoiding the construction of a substation. Likewise, the internal line for the wind farm has been designed so that it runs underground, thus eliminating the visual aspect thereof.

Regarding the monitoring of birdlife, in addition to the study included in the wind farm’s project design phase, during the exploitation phase a monitoring plan will be undertaken to track the possible impact on birds so that improvement mechanisms can be established in the event they are necessary. Likewise, the environmental impact study shows no negative effects on habitats in the exploitation phase.

Finally, as noted in the archaeology and cultural heritage report, corrective measures have been established to guarantee suitable protection and preservation of all elements detected to be items of cultural heritage.
