Greenalia completes a geophysical campaign for its first floating offshore wind farm in Spain, Gofio, of 50 MW

  • This technical study, prepared by the canary company ECOS, will allow progress in the detailed design of the floating structures
  • Thus, the company confirms its commitment to the development of floating offshore wind, one of the technologies for which greater growth is expected in the coming years.

The renewable energy producer Greenalia is advancing in the development of its floating offshore wind projects in the Canary Islands, with the recent execution of a complete geophysical campaign in San Bartolomé de Tirajana where it plans to locate the PE Gofio, of 50 MW. The main objective of this action is to obtain a more detailed knowledge of the conditions of the seabed where this primer floating offshore wind farm will be implemented. In this way you will be able to advance with greater precision in the design processes of the floating structures and the project certification.

The results of this campaign have confirmed the analysis carried out within the Environmental Impact Study (EIA), prepared in 2020, and has also allowed to obtain a greater knowledge of the biodiversity of the seabed. These works show the compatibility with the environment and the reduced environmental impact that the project could generate.

The study has been developed over two months in which a bathymetric and morphological survey of the seabed of great precision has been carried out, which has allowed to advance in in-depth analysis of the benthic communities (the different aquatic ecosystems) and underwater archaeology. For this, it has had the additional support of an underwater ROV, in addition to the characterization of the marine substrates using an underwater research system, type Geopulse.

This award is part of the collaboration agreement that Greenalia signed last year with the Canary Islands Maritime Cluster (of which ECOS is a partner). An agreement through which to share experience and knowledge on offshore wind energy, especially on floating wind energy.

With this new step, Greenalia once again confirms its commitment to the development of its floating wind energy projects, one of the renewable generation sources called to be the basis of green growth in Europe for the coming years.
