Greenalia and UDC create the energy transition chair to promote research & awareness on climate change

  • With the agreement signed today between the two entities, a project focused on the decarbonization process, the energy transition and the fight against global warming is launched
  • The renewable energy producer, based in A Coruña, is committed to expanding its sustainability reach through the launch of this new research and knowledge transfer space
  • Another of the objectives of this Chair is to promote new specialized training paths in the green energy sector

The renewable energy producer Greenalia and the University of Coruña (UDC) kick-off their Chair for the Energy Transition through which both organizations seek to promote research, awareness, and knowledge transfer on the impact of climate change, the decarbonization process and the energy transition, with special attention to its effects in our region. In addition to these objectives, both entities seek to develop and promote new talent in these areas, as green jobs will increasingly require more and better specialists.

To this end, the company based in A Coruña is committed to financing the different activities planned annually within the framework of this Chair. A four-year development and implementation agreement was signed today by Manuel García, Greenalia’s CEO, and Julio Abalde, UDC’s Headmaster.

Both entities have agreed on the common interest of addressing, through this Chair, an issue as important as the energy transition. After all, a paradigm change is unfolding considering the serious international situation due to the war in Ukraine; plus, a summer in which the water resource situation throughout Europe has become critical, high temperatures and large fires have raised all the alarms about the Planet’s health. A situation that requires the implementation of far-reaching measures, for which the contribution of experts and researchers is key.

In this context, Manuel García, the company’s CEO explained that “at Greenalia, where green energy and the protection of biodiversity are at our core and origin, we have considered it necessary to go a step further. For this reason, we have formalized a new line of continuous and stable collaboration with researchers, teachers, experts, and students, so that new systems and applications can be developed for a more inclusive, egalitarian, and fair transition”. All this, he added, should serve not only to broaden our knowledge, and activate new proposals and improvements in the different energy developments that are carried out, but also to promote new, more specialized training lines that can respond to the sector needs, which is set to grow in the coming decades.

Investment and planning

As stated in the agreement, Greenalia foresees a total of 80,000 euros for the Chair, which will be used to carry out activities in the field of training, awareness and the transfer of knowledge and joint research. It also establishes the figure of Chair Director and a Monitoring Committee.
